When we conduct a site assessment, the front entrance is rarely the vulnerability we flag first — it's the gate behind the gym that's been propped open since fall sports started, or the loading dock that vendors treat as a second front door. A real perimeter security plan starts with a complete inventory, not an assumption about where people enter.

Treating cars and people as the same access problem is how tailgating happens. A vehicle gate that opens wide enough to admit a bus also admits anyone walking in behind it unless the two flows are deliberately separated.
Fencing stops or slows someone. Lighting and sightlines are what let staff, cameras, and neighbors notice them while they're trying. A fence with dead ground behind it is a fence that only works during the day.
Every material decision on a perimeter project sends a message to the people who use the campus every day. Eight-foot fencing topped with visible anti-climb hardware may be appropriate for a specific vulnerability, but applied everywhere it tells students and families the building doesn't trust them, and that has its own cost to school culture and community relationships.
